The Myanmar military has continued its crackdown on media workers amid the ongoing conflict, filing ‘criminal mutiny’ charges against independent outlet The Irrawaddy, on March 12.

More recently, BBC reporter Aung Thura and Than Htike Aung, a reporter with independent local outlet Mizzima, were both also detained. They join a growing list of at least 40 journalists arrested during the conflict since February 1, 2021.

The AJF calls for their release and the release of all media workers caught up in the broader arrests on civilians during this conflict. Press freedom is essential, especially during a crisis. They must be released and allowed to do their jobs.

The CPJ details these recent events here.
