We partnered with lawfirm Allens to review Australian secrecy laws. We submitted our findings as part of the Attorney-General’s Department Review of Secrecy Provisions consulation process. Our submission can be read here.
The review developed 11 recommendations to guide future work to:
- reduce the number of secrecy provisions
- support a consistent approach to the framing of secrecy provisions
- maintain essential protections for Commonwealth information
- respond to stakeholder concerns about the impact of secrecy provisions on press freedom.
The department’s full review responding to submissions can be read here.
