The Federal Government’s decision to allocate 15 million dollars in funding over two years to the Australian Associated Press (AAP) is a much needed and welcome support for the role journalism plays in our democracy.
AJF works to ensure support for the public’s right to know in Australia’s legal code. This can only be achieved in tandem with a healthy and diverse media ecosystem, and AAP play a fundamental role in that.
Peter Greste, AJF Director and Spokesperson, said “AAP’s work has always been fundamental to public interest journalism in this country. We nearly saw them go last year, which would have had dire consequences for our democracy. With this funding, the government has clearly recognised the importance of having a well-financed national news agency. This is good news for every Australian.”
