Advocacy & Action for
Journalists’ Freedom

With digital technologies challenging traditional models of news, ‘fake news’ polluting the news environment, and governments clamping down on the media in the name of national security, the principles underpinning press freedom are under threat. These challenges are made more profound by a rapidly changing regional and global political landscape.

In addition, the Asia–Pacific region is witnessing deeply troubling attacks on press freedom in places like China, the Philippines, Cambodia and Myanmar.

Our advocacy and action approach is well-informed and direct:

In advanced democracies (such as Australia) where press freedom is either explicit or implied in various laws, we will be vigilant and advocate for journalism to governments and fight for press freedom principles in the courts.

In younger Asian democracies, such as Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia, the issues are more varied and complex. For instance, some politicians recognise the pressure from citizens will inevitably grow and lead to greater press freedom, but there is anxiety on how to undertake the transformation. The Alliance can advise/encourage those parties via personal presentations and shining a light on issues.

In emerging economies, with repressive regimes, the issues are different still, where the role of the Alliance will be to apply pressure to allow journalists greater access to information, and, when required, campaign for journalists’ safety and the release of journalists from jail.
