“The AJF is incredibly grateful to Crikey for recognising the importance of our work to support media freedom and the high standards of journalism in Australia,” said the AJF’s Executive Director Prof. Peter Greste.
On Tuesday, Crikey announced it was handing to the Alliance for Journalists’ Freedom the residual $588,000 raised to cover the costs of its defence in the defamation case brought by Lachlan Murdoch. This followed an earlier commitment to supporters that any unspent funds would be passed on to the AJF. In April this year, Murdoch’s lawyers withdrew the case.
“We are both grateful and humbled by the generous donation from Crikey, and their supporters,” Peter Greste said.
“We will put the funds to good use, to promote greater press freedom, which is essential to a healthy democracy. This includes campaigning for a Media Freedom Act, supported by a voluntary membership that will recognise quality journalism.”
